Career Coaching

You had a big decision to make when you were all of 18 or 19 years old.  You were supposed to decide what to do with the rest of your life.

But life doesn’t work that way.  You don’t work that way.

You are a dynamic creature who grows and changes with age and experience.  So it makes perfect sense that your life and career will grow and change too.

Your life doesn’t have to be broken in order to reach out for career coaching.

You don’t have to be at a point where you hate your job.  Maybe it just doesn’t fit you very well anymore.  Or maybe you just want to try something different.  Or maybe you’re caught up in the rat race and looking for more fulfillment.  It’s time for a change.

There are a number of reasons why you may want to reach out for career coaching.

    • I’m totally burnt out and have no idea what to do about it.
    • How can I find a career where I really get to use my gifts?
    • How can I find a career that I feel passionate about?
    • I feel like I’m living a version of Groundhog Day, doing the same thing day in and day out.
    • Is this all there is? Something’s missing.
    • How can I feel better about myself?
    • I should be happy by now, but I’m not.
    • I need more work life balance.
    • I want a career where I really get to use my gifts.
    • I’m so overwhelmed! Theres never enough time.
    • On paper everything looks great career-wise, but I still feel like something’s missing.
    • I thought if I made it to this point in my career I’d be happy, but I’m not.
    • How do I make it to the next level in my career?
    • How do I get back into the workforce if I’ve been gone for a while?
    • What should my next move be in my career?

A number of years ago, I was struggling with my career.  The problem was actually quite simple, I hated what I was doing.

I spent day after day staring at mind-numbing spreadsheet after mind-numbing spreadsheet, waiting for the hours to pass so I could escape – either to the bar or to my home.

One day, I finally reached my breaking point, and I called a career consultant to make an appointment.  One very large sum of money later, I had a fancy 57-page report to show for what I had spent.  The report listed possible careers from marketing to teaching to even law enforcement, all based on traits in my personality profile.

It was highly entertaining bedtime reading.

Two years later I was still stuck in exactly the same place.

So I did what any well-intentioned person without a clue would do.  I went back to school and got an MBA.  Another two years and thousands more dollars later, where was I?  Right back where I had started when I first graduated from college 10 years before.

In my not so humble opinion, here’s why most career coaching fails.  It focuses on the what (marketing vs. teaching vs. law enforcement) as opposed to the why.
      • So, what’s your Why?
      • Why do you get out of bed in the morning?
      • Why is this particular career path so important to you? (if it is)
      • Why will this course of action enable you to make a real difference?

That’s what we are going to spend your initial coaching sessions figuring out – your why.

Then we’re going to work on the how – how you actually make your why happen, which eventually will lead to the what.

And this is another reason why a lot of life and career coaching falls short.  After the fancy report is generated, there’s not much ongoing support.  But it’s often during the implementation stage when your gremlins start to rear their ugly heads.

You might find yourself getting trapped in assumption after assumption about why a career change isn’t possible.  You may hold a number of limiting beliefs about what you can and can’t do.  You may have completely given up hope that things can ever be different.  They can.

And that’s when career coaching swoops in to save the day!  It will move you through these challenges session after session so you can build momentum and achieve your goals.

First comes your why, then comes your how, and then comes your what.  That’s the secret to career coaching that works!
