Career Coaching

You had a big decision to make when you were all of 18 or 19 years old.  You were supposed to decide what to do with the rest of your life.

But life doesn’t work that way.  You don’t work that way.

You are a dynamic creature who grows and changes with age and experience.  So it makes perfect sense that your life and career will grow and change too.

Your life doesn’t have to be broken in order to reach out for career coaching.

You don’t have to be at a point where you hate your job.  Maybe it just doesn’t fit you very well anymore.  Or maybe you just want to try something different.  Or maybe you’re caught up in the rat race and looking for more fulfillment.  It’s time for a change.

Elliott’s Story

Check out the following video that highlights one of my recent clients, Elliott, who I helped navigate a career change when her music industry job was lost to COVID:

There are a number of reasons you might reach out for a career coach.

      • I’m totally burnt out and have no idea what to do about it.
      • COVID has killed my industry sector – help!
      • How can I find a career where I really get to use my gifts?
      • I feel like I’m living a version of Groundhog Day, doing the same thing day in and day out.
      • Is this all there is?
      • How can I feel better about myself?
      • I should be happy by now, but I’m not.
      • I need more work life balance.
      • I’m so overwhelmed! Theres never enough time.
      • On paper everything looks great career-wise, but I still feel like something’s missing.
      • I thought if I made it to this point in my career I’d be happy, but I’m not.
      • How do I make it to the next level in my career?
      • How do I get back into the workforce if I’ve been gone for a while?
      • What should my next move be in my career?

A number of years ago, I was struggling with my career.  I spent day after day staring at mind-numbing spreadsheet after mind-numbing spreadsheet, waiting for the hours to pass so I could escape to happy hour.

One day, I finally reached my breaking point, and I called a career consultant to make an appointment.  One very large sum of money later, I had a fancy 57-page report to show for what I had spent.  The report listed possible careers from marketing to teaching to even law enforcement, all based on traits in my personality profile.

It was highly entertaining bedtime reading.

Two years later I was still stuck in exactly the same place.

So I did what any well-intentioned person without a clue would do.  I went back to school and got an MBA.  Another two years and thousands more dollars later, where was I?  Right back where I had started when I first graduated from college 10 years before.

In my not so humble opinion, here’s why most career coaching fails.  It focuses on the what as opposed to the why.

That’s what we are going to spend your initial coaching sessions figuring out – your why.

Then we’re going to work on the how – how you actually make your why happen, which eventually will lead to the what.

First comes your why, then comes your how, and then comes your what.  That’s the secret to career coaching that works!
